Quick question - anyone done the peanut butter pinecone thing with their kids? My 5yo's preschool sent home instructions but I want to make sure it's not going to be a disaster before I commit. How messy are we talking?
One thing the preschool probably didn't mention - if you live somewhere squirrels exist, they will DESTROY this. Like it'll be gone in 2 days. But that's part of the fun actually, watching the birds and squirrels fight over it
The preschool sends home these projects because they're actually hard to mess up which is the whole point. Just follow the instructions, let your kid do most of it even if it's imperfect, and hang it somewhere birds will actually see it. Don't overthink it
Possible disaster: peanut butter gets EVERYWHERE. On clothes, hair, the floor, the dog. But it's the good kind of disaster and totally worth it
We did this last year with my 4yo. It's genuinely less messy than you'd think, just do it over a tray or newspaper. Kid loved it. Only warning: if you use real peanut butter instead of the fake stuff, cleanup takes longer
The mess is real but manageable - just lay out a picnic blanket outside and do it there. Saves your house and makes cleanup literally just rolling it up
We did this exact thing last month. Pro tip: use a spoon or butter knife so your 5yo doesn't just eat the peanut butter straight from the jar with their fingers. Which obviously my kid immediately did anyway
Yes do it. Literally just peanut butter, pinecone, and birdseed. 20 minute activity max. My 5yo talked about 'our' bird feeder for weeks after
We did it and the birds actually came back lol. That was the coolest part for my kid - she could point to it from the window and be like 'I made that'

It's honestly not a disaster at all, pretty easy project. Just FYI the peanut butter gets MESSY. Like your kid will have it all over their hands and clothes messy. But the pinecone part is fun because they can squish the PB into all the little cone gaps. Just do it outside or over a tarp lol
Nailed it with the PB-squishing comment lol. My daughter treated it like she was doing icing on a cake. Took forever but she loved it. Just accept it'll take longer than you think and lean into it
