Picky eater cooking project - any ideas?

My 6yo will literally only eat like 5 foods and I thought if I got him involved in cooking maybe he'd branch out? So far we made pizza (he only ate the crust) and pancakes (at least he ate those). Anyone had success getting picky kids to actually TRY new stuff by cooking with them? Or am I just setting myself up for failure?
