Rec league baseball - is it actually worth the money?

My 9yo wants to try baseball this spring. The local rec league is $150 for the season plus we need a glove, cleats, and a bat. That's easily $300+ total. He's never played before so idk if he'll even stick with it. Parents in here spending that kind of money or am I overthinking it? Trying to figure out if I should commit to this.
