Road trip fail: honest advice needed

Planning a 14-hour drive to Phoenix with kids aged 5, 7, and 9. My original plan was basically "bring snacks and hope for the best" but my wife rightfully called that stupid. What actually works? Tablets with shows? Books? How many bathroom stops should I budget for? We're leaving in 3 weeks and I want to actually survive this without everyone hating me.
