Belaying kids at an actual rock gym a few times last summer got my 9yo obsessed. There's a new gym 15 min from our house and they're pushing a $50/month kids membership. Is this one of those activities that'll be intense for 3 months then die off, or have you guys seen your kids stick with it? Anyone have a gym rec in the Chicago area?
If your 9yo is that into it then yeah, totally worth it. Climbing is one of those activities that actually keeps kids engaged instead of just staring at screens. Plus you can go with them which is a win.
This is perfect bonding time honestly. You get to belay them and actually be involved in what they're doing instead of just dropping them off. Do it.
One thing nobody tells you is how expensive it gets with friends. Your 9yo will want to bring buddies and then you're basically subsidizing their membership too.
Check if they have a day pass option first. Sometimes one visit is enough to scratch the itch and you find out your kid gets nervous on walls after the first time. Mine did that.

The membership paid for itself in my situation after like 4 visits. Gas money to drive out there every weekend was adding up fast. Now we go every Saturday and it's become our thing.
