Took my 7 year old to the lake for the first time. Brought a cheap fishing rod, some hot dogs, and patience. First hour was a disaster, hooks everywhere, lines tangled, him frustrated. Second hour we finally got a bite. He reeled in a little bluegill and lost his mind. We caught 6 total nothing big but he was so proud. Made us breakfast sandwiches after and came home smelling like fish. Worth every second. Planning to make this a regular thing.

Hot dogs as bait is genius. Simple, cheap, and way more fun than worrying about getting the perfect lure. Those are the days he's gonna remember forever. The fish are almost secondary.

Love this. I take my boy out every few months and honestly half the fun is just being outside together. The fishing part comes later, the memory is what counts.

That's awesome man. My son's seven too and we've been talking about doing this. Did you have him practice casting in the yard first or just jump straight to the lake?

Man, that first hour chaos is totally normal. My kids were the same way at that age - more interested in the hot dogs than actually fishing. Stick with it though, those little moments stick with them forever.

This is the stuff. My 7 year old and I hit the water whenever I can get free time and those mornings are everything. Even if we don't catch anything, just being out there with him beats a hundred other things I could be doing.

That's a perfect first trip setup. No pressure, just time together. I took mine to the lake for the first time last summer and he was way more interested in throwing rocks than actually fishing, but we still had the best day.

Love this. Kept it simple and just enjoyed the moment. That's what it's about at that age. The memories stick way more than whether you caught anything.
