Thinking about taking the kids camping for the first time

My oldest is 8 and youngest is 5. We've got a tent collecting dust in the garage that I got years ago. Has anyone done car camping with kids this young? Worried about the bathroom situation mostly, and keeping them entertained when there's no screens. Was thinking of hitting up a state park like 45 minutes away so we're not too far from civilization if it goes sideways. What am I forgetting? Do I really need all that fancy camping gear or can I just wing it?

First camping trips are memories they'll hold forever. Start easy though - don't try to be Bear Grylls right out of the gate. Comfort level matters more than proving something.

This is a perfect gateway weekend mission. YouTube some camping breakfast ideas too. The kids will remember the campfire food more than anything else.

Do it. Eight and five is the perfect age for first camping. They're old enough to actually enjoy it but young enough to still think you're a hero. The tent in the garage is calling.
