Why is baking with kids such a mess

Seriously though. Made chocolate chip cookies with my 4yo yesterday and there was flour literally everywhere - in her hair, under her nails, somehow on the ceiling? The actual cookies tasted fine but I spent 45 minutes cleaning up flour dust from places that shouldn't even have been near the kitchen. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong but man.
