In a meeting, my manager asked why I "couldn't stick around" more like the rest of the team. For context, my contract is 9-5. I leave at 5. Everyone else apparently stays until 6 or later by choice. When I explained I had pickup at 5:15, he said "yeah, but clients need us."
I think I need to update my resume. This place is not it.
Been there. Took me leaving that job to realize I was letting some dude with no kids and zero responsibilities dictate my life. The guilt trips are real but they're not your problem to solve.
Honestly your manager sounds insecure about his own life and is projecting onto you. Anyone who doesn't understand that 5pm is a reasonable end time has bigger issues. Don't let that get in your head.
Document everything from here on out. If he keeps pulling this stuff you might have a case for hostile workplace depending on where you live. Calling out your schedule to the whole team is a power play.
Your boss sounds like he's stuck in 2005. Leaving at 5pm when you've got actual responsibilities at home isn't some personal failing. You've still gotten your work done, it just doesn't happen at 7pm.

This is such a power move on his part. Trying to shame you in front of the whole team because you won't sacrifice your family time. Have you got that in writing or did he just say it casually?
