Boston office killed my commute, family life in shambles

Got transferred to our Boston office last month and the 90-minute commute each way is absolutely wrecking us. I leave at 7am, don't get home til 6:15pm, kids are already at that weird overstimulated stage. My 8yo cries when I leave in the morning now. I could try to transfer back to the Pittsburgh office but there's no advancement there and we need the money. Thinking about relocating our whole family to Boston but that means my wife leaving her job, ripping the kids out of their schools, everything. Has anyone made a major move for work and was it worth it? Or should I ask about going back remote for part of the week?

I hate to say it but you might need to look at other options. Maybe a job closer to home even if it pays slightly less, or pushing hard for a work from home arrangement. Your family needs you present more than they need that paycheck.

That commute to Boston is no joke. Have you explored carpooling or audio books at least to make the drive less painful? Still won't fix the time issue but might make it bearable.

The Boston office thing is probably negotiable. Most companies these days understand that not everyone can do a 90-minute commute. Push back on this and be honest about how it's affecting your family situation.

90 minutes each way is brutal. I did that commute for 6 months and it destroyed me. You're looking at like 3 hours of your day just in the car. Have you talked to your boss about going hybrid at least a few days a week?

This is a real problem because you're missing dinner, bedtime routines, all the little moments with your kids. The money probably isn't worth it if you're this miserable. Is there any chance of remote work from home a couple days a week?
