Career advancement or more time with family?

Got offered a promotion that comes with a lot more travel and longer hours. Better pay, better title, exactly what I've been working toward for years. But my oldest starts middle school next year and I want to be present for that stuff. My wife is supportive either way but she's clearly stressed about me being gone more. Anyone turned down a big opportunity for their family? No judgment just need to think through this.

This is the hardest question to answer. I've seen guys take the promotion and regret it, and other guys regret not taking it. What does your gut tell you when you picture being gone all the time?

This is the tough one. I turned down a similar gig because my kids were still young, but you gotta think about what matters most to you long term. Board game night every Friday keeps me sane, and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

I get it, you've been grinding toward this. Just do the math on what you'd actually miss - soccer games, homework help, just being present. Sometimes the title isn't worth the trade-off.

Man, I've been in your shoes and honestly the extra money never made up for missing bedtime stories. Those years go so fast - the promotion will still be there in a few years if you want it then.

I turned down a similar offer two years ago and honestly best decision I made as a dad. The money was tempting but missing school pickups and bedtimes adds up fast. Only you know what's right for your family though.

Can you negotiate the travel part? Like maybe take it but push back on the amount of time you'd be gone? Sometimes the title bump isn't worth sacrificing the day to day stuff.
