Career stalling because I won't do the travel thing anymore

My boss basically told me the next promotion requires me to be in the office 4 days a week minimum and willing to travel 20% of the time. My kids are 4 and 7, wife works part time. I know what the right move is but I also know my manager sees it as me not being ambitious anymore. It sucks because I AM ambitious but not at the expense of actually knowing my kids. Wondering if I'm making a huge mistake or if I'm the only dad thinking this way.

4 days a week in office is basically saying they want you to pretend you don't have kids. You're not alone in this - tons of dads are hitting this wall right now. Have you looked at what other companies in your field are doing with remote flexibility?
I'd ask your boss directly if the role itself requires the office time or if it's just their preference. Sometimes when you push back with actual questions they realize the policy is outdated. Worth a shot before you decide to walk.
