Career switch at 38 with three kids

I'm a software engineer making decent money but I absolutely hate it. Been thinking about switching to something that pays less but makes me happier. The problem is I got three kids and a mortgage so the financial hit is scary. My wife is supportive but realistically we'd have to cut back. Is anyone doing something completely different now that they're older with a family? How did you make it work?

This is a big move but it sounds like you've been thinking about it seriously. Whatever you do, make sure the numbers actually work before you jump.

I respect this so much. Money's important with three kids, but so is not being miserable 40 hours a week. What's the field you're thinking about switching to?

Four kids here and I can tell you the happier parent is worth more than the extra paycheck. If you can make it work financially, your kids will feel the difference.
