Career vs family, how do you actually balance it?

Got offered a promotion that would basically require me to work 60+ hours a week. More money, better title, but I'd barely see my kids. They're 5 and 3 right now and honestly this is the age I don't want to miss. But I also feel like I'm supposed to be ambitious and provide more. Talked to my wife and she's supportive either way but I know she'd prefer I stay where I am. This shouldn't be this hard. How do other dads make this decision?

Man, I turned down something similar a couple years back and honestly don't regret it. Those 5 and 7 year old years go so fast, and you can't get them back grilling burgers in the backyard. The money and title aren't worth missing that.

I've been there with the promotion question. My advice is ask if there's flexibility or a path that doesn't require the full 60 hours right away. Sometimes companies are more willing to negotiate than you'd think, especially if you've proven yourself.
