Got offered a remote position that would let me see my kids after school instead of relying on aftercare til 6. But it's technically a lateral move and my boss implied I'd miss out on the promotions track if I'm not in the office. Am I overthinking this or is that a legit concern? Kids are 8 and 10 so this window won't last forever but I also don't want to tank my career.
This is the choice that keeps me up at night too. How established are you in your career though? If you're already solid, remote might not kill your prospects as much as you think. Companies are more flexible about this stuff now.

Do it. I'm serious. I did the remote thing and yeah, maybe you're not in the office for every meeting, but you're present for your kids. That matters more than you think right now. Advancement will come, but these years with them go fast.
Don't sleep on this opportunity. Being present after school changes the whole dynamic at home. Your kids remember the time you spend with them way more than they remember the title on your business card.
Remote is huge if you can actually pull it off. I took a similar step and yes, I probably won't move up as fast, but being here for after school pickup is worth more than I thought it would be. The advancement will still be there later if you want it.

I get the advancement worry but hear me out - you can still move up, just differently. I went remote two years ago and actually landed a promotion because I was more productive without the commute stress. The key is being visible in meetings and delivering results. Your kids seeing you at 3pm instead of 6pm might be the real advancement.
