Currently working 8:30-5:30, want to propose 7am-4pm so I can pick up my kindergartner at 4:15. Earlier start sucks but the pickup would change everything for my family. My manager is pretty chill but I don't want to seem unreasonable. We're not a super flexible company culture but we're not corporate either. Is this a normal request or am I asking for a pony?
Don't undersell the full day of work thing. You're not asking for less hours, just different hours. That's a pretty easy ask compared to part time.
Pick up time is the best reason to ask. Most managers get it if they have kids. Just make sure your work output doesn't slip and you're still available for meetings.
Biggest thing is showing how this doesn't impact the team. If you're the person holding up meetings at 4pm then it's harder to swing. But if you're good on that front, most places are cool with it now.
I did something similar and framed it around productivity and pickup responsibilities. Started with asking for a month trial. After a month of no issues they made it permanent.
7am-4pm is reasonable and honestly employers are more flexible on this now than they used to be. The fact that you're staying the full 8 hours matters more than when you're there. Just make sure your boss knows you're not cutting hours or availability.

I got laughed at for even asking. Different company now and they didn't blink at it. Maybe timing with your company is the real question here.
