Got passed over for promotion, feeling like a failure

They gave the promotion to Derek from the other team. I've been grinding for two years thinking this was my shot and my kids kept asking when I'd be the boss now. Had to tell them I didn't get it. Sounds stupid but I felt like I let them down. Wife reminded me that I provide for them and they're proud of me regardless. Still stings though. Wondering if I should look for another job or stick it out. Anyone been through this and how did you move forward?

That stings but honestly Derek getting promoted might have nothing to do with your work. Sometimes it's timing, sometimes it's politics, sometimes they already had him slotted. Don't let this one thing define you as a dad or employee.

You're not a failure dude. One promotion doesn't determine your worth. But if you want to know what went sideways, ask your manager what you can do differently. Sometimes that conversation is more valuable than the promotion anyway.

This is rough I know but remember your kids don't care if you got promoted. They care that you're there. You're providing for your family and that matters way more than a title.
