Got passed over for promotion, trying not to take it home

This is my third year being told I'm 'not quite ready' for the next level. I'm actually a better engineer than some guys in those roles but apparently I don't have the right 'presence' or whatever. Came home yesterday in a mood and pretty much ignored my family all evening. My 6 year old asked why daddy was mad and I realized I was taking my work frustration out on them. How do you guys separate professional disappointment from home life? I don't want my kids thinking my love depends on my job performance.
