They offered me a director role with a big raise but it requires being on site 2 days a week instead of full remote, plus occasional travel. My kids are 7 and 9. The money would be really nice and it's a career move I've wanted but I keep thinking about all the nights I'd miss. Anyone been through this decision? What did you choose?
This is the real struggle. More money is great but at what cost? I'd sit down and really think about how much time that extra travel actually is. Is it two full days or just two days on site with flexibility? That changes things.
Two days a week adds up quick when you factor in prep and travel time. And it gets harder the older your kids get - suddenly they've got their own stuff going on. Worth considering if you can negotiate it to one day or find some flexibility.
I turned down a similar promotion a few years back and haven't regretted it. The raise is nice but these years with your kids go fast. Make sure the tradeoff is actually worth it before you commit.
