This is the worst scenario. I had to leave a client call once because daycare called and my wife was in surgery. Is your company flexible with working from home at all?
Have you thought about asking your boss if you can have one flex day a month or some kind of backup plan? Most places are more understanding about this than we think.
This is where coparenting comes in handy if you can swing it. We trade off when stuff like this happens. You can't always be the one to leave work. Maybe flag this with your wife and see if you can have a backup plan?

Ugh I hate this situation. We've done the same thing where one of us has to drop everything. My wife and I finally sat down and decided which meetings I can move and which ones she has to handle so it's not always random crisis mode.
