How do you handle sick kids and work deadlines?

My son woke up with a fever today and daycare won't take him. I've got a presentation I'm supposed to lead at 2pm. My wife has back to back meetings she can't move. This is the stuff they don't tell you about when you're juggling two careers and kids. Anyone have tips for managing this without losing your mind or your job?

The fever thing is the worst because you can't send them anywhere but you've got work stuff that won't wait. We learned to have a backup person on speed dial for exactly this situation.

This is brutal. I've been there and honestly I had to just pick the presentation or the kid because there's no way to do both well. Called my boss, rescheduled, stayed home. Your kid comes first.

Do you have anyone who can take him for a few hours? Parent, partner, trusted friend? If the presentation is really that critical at least you could get some of the day covered.
