Just got asked to lead a project that requires travel. How do I say no without killing my career?

So my boss came to me today with this "incredible opportunity" to lead our new client rollout. Sounds great on paper but it's 3 weeks of travel over the next 2 months. My daughter just started kindergarten and my wife is drowning with her own work stuff. I really want this but I also don't want to miss being here right now. Anyone else had to turn down big opportunities to stay present? What did you say to your manager without sounding like you're not committed?

Have you asked what 'travel' actually means? Sometimes these things aren't as bad as they sound. Could be one trip per quarter or could be every other week. Get the full picture before you decide.

This is the tough one. I've turned down two promotions because of the travel. It stung but I'd rather be here for soccer games and dinners. Your career will still be there when the kids are older.

Don't ghost this one without exploring it first. Ask your boss if there's any flexibility on the travel dates or structure - you might be surprised what you can negotiate.

Four kids here and I've been in that exact chair. The trick is framing it right - tell them you're all in on the project but need to work the logistics so you're actually present. Some bosses get it, some don't.

Before you say no, run the numbers with your family. Sometimes three weeks is doable if it's really the move for you guys long term. I turned one down that I probably shouldn't have.

Been there man. I told my boss I'd lead it but needed to limit travel to one week per month max. Took some negotiating but we found middle ground. You don't have to say flat out no, just set the boundaries that work for your family.
