Passed up promotion because I didn't want to travel more

So my boss offered me a senior role with a 40% raise but it requires being on the road 3 weeks a month. Five years ago I would have jumped at it. Now I have a 4 year old who asks why daddy's away and a wife who's already managing everything solo. I turned it down and my boss looked shocked. Some of my coworkers think I'm crazy but honestly? No amount of money is worth missing my kids growing up. This is the first time I've prioritized family over career and it feels weird but right.

Three weeks a month on the road would've been me five years ago too, but now? Nah. You made the call and you can always chase that promotion later when the kids are older if you want to.

That's a tough call man. 40% raise is serious money, but you can't get those years back with your kids. I turned down a bigger role a few years ago for the same reason and I still think it was the right move.

Man, respect for that decision. 3 weeks a month away would kill you as a parent. You'd miss so much. The 40% raise looks good on paper until you realize you're missing your kids grow up.

I turned down a big opportunity last year for the same reason. My boss didn't get it at first but honestly once my kids are older I can chase that stuff. Right now they need their dad home. You made the right call.

Did your boss understand why you said no or did they act surprised? I feel like some managers just don't get that being present matters more to us than climbing the ladder.
