RANT: Manager keeps scheduling late meetings

I explicitly told my boss that I need to be home by 6pm to help with bedtime routine. He knows I have three kids. So WHY does he keep scheduling calls at 4:30pm that "definitely" run past 5:30? I've left early twice anyway - staying late is not negotiable - but now I'm worried it's impacting how he sees my work. This job isn't worth missing bedtime every other week, but I also can't afford to lose it rn.

6pm is totally reasonable. Bedtime routine is sacred time and your boss should respect that. Have you considered asking for it in writing so there's no ambiguity? Might help if he tries to schedule around it again.

What industry are you in? I wonder if this is more common in certain fields. Either way sounds like your manager needs a reminder that you're a parent first.

I feel this in my soul. My old manager used to do this constantly and I finally just started declining the late meetings and sending a message saying I had a prior commitment. He eventually stopped asking. Sometimes you gotta set the boundary yourself.

This happened to me for months until I literally blocked off 5:45-6:15pm on my calendar and called it a hard stop meeting. Made it visible to everyone. My manager finally got the hint when he saw it conflicted with three meetings he was trying to schedule. Definitely worth a try.

Have you had a sit down with HR about this? Not trying to escalate but if you've already told him once and he's still doing it, that's a pattern. Document the dates and times when you mention it versus when the meetings get scheduled.
