Rant: My boss called me lazy for leaving at 5 to pick up my kids

I get my work done. I hit every deadline. I produce quality results. But because I leave at 5 PM sharp to pick my kids up from daycare before they close at 5:30, suddenly I'm not committed. My wife works too but apparently thats different. This is ridiculous. I'm not defined by hours at a desk. I'm doing my job AND being present for my family. Is this still a thing in 2024? How do you guys handle this kind of judgment from management?

I've been there man. Leaving at 5 to pick up from daycare before closing is non-negotiable for me too, and yeah I've gotten the same comments. But my kids matter more than face time in the office. Keep doing what you're doing.

Your boss is wrong and frankly doesn't understand what actually matters. You're hitting deadlines AND being there for your kids. That's not lazy, that's having your priorities straight.

Four kids, chaotic schedule, and I can tell you the dads who leave early to pick their kids up are the ones actually getting stuff done. Your boss would rather see you at your desk looking busy than getting real results.
