My company is supposedly remote friendly but my manager keeps saying I need to be in the office 5 days a week to be seen and be taken seriously for promotions. My kids are at home with a nanny and I feel like I'm missing everything. Most of my actual work could be done from home. Is it worth pushing back or am I just going to get passed over for promotions if I do?
That's frustrating man, especially when the company says remote-friendly but your manager has other ideas. Have you documented these conversations? Might be worth pushing back on the actual business need for 5 days in office.
That's frustrating. Remote friendly doesn't mean anything if they're not actually letting you be remote. Have you tried pushing back and saying you've got standing commitments on certain days? Sometimes managers just test the boundaries to see what they can get away with.
I had a manager pull this same thing. The remote job was the only reason I even took it because of my custody schedule. I ended up job hunting and found something that actually meant what they said. Sometimes it's not worth fighting.
Get that in writing if you can. Email your manager saying something like 'Just confirming we're good on me working remote on X days per week' and CC whoever needs to see it. Makes it harder for them to change the story later.
