I got 8 weeks of paternity leave lined up and I'm pumped but also terrified. Company says they'll hold my position but you know how it is. Guys who take leave don't get the big projects. I'm worried about my trajectory but I also don't want to miss this time with my newborn. Is it worth it or am I hurting my career? What did you guys do?
Congrats on the paternity leave, that's huge. The anxiety is normal but honestly those 8 weeks are going to fly by and you'll never regret that time. As for the career stuff, most companies say that but they usually come through. Just do excellent work when you get back.
The fear is real but here's the thing - good companies don't punish people for taking leave they earned. If they do, that's information you need to know about that place anyway. Use every day and be present with your kid.
I'd get that 'they'll hold your job' thing in writing if you haven't already. Not to be paranoid but just to cover yourself. Took my leave with my second and it was the best decision. You got this.

Eight weeks is incredible. Don't let the fear get in your head. Document what you do before you leave, make it easy for whoever covers you, and then actually disconnect. Managers respect people who take their leave - shows confidence.
