The guilt of missing another school event

My daughter had a fall festival at school today. Middle of the day, impossible for me to get away from back to back meetings. My wife went with the younger kids. Felt terrible watching the pictures come through. She didn't say anything but I know she noticed I wasn't there. This job pays the bills but sometimes I wonder if I'm getting the math right on what matters. Anyone figure out how to actually balance this or is it just a constant lose lose situation?

Take a picture if your wife can and ask your daughter to tell you all about it that night. Make it special when you hear it from her. I've found my kids actually like sharing that stuff one-on-one anyway.

I know this hits hard. The middle of the day stuff is the worst because it's literally impossible. But you're showing up in the ways you can, and that counts for something real.

That guilt is real and I feel it constantly with my schedule. Three kids and I still miss stuff. The best thing I did was stop beating myself up about the events I can't control and make sure I'm present for the ones I can. Your daughter will remember your effort more than the fall festival.

This is the part of working dad life that nobody talks about enough. Make sure you catch something this month though, even if it's small. Your daughter needs to see you in that space too.
