Thinking about asking for remote work arrangement

Been at my company 5 years and they're pretty old school about office time but I've got a 3 year old at home and my wife just went back to full time. Daycare costs are killing us and I feel like I'm missing everything. The thing is my boss is not the flexible type and I'm worried asking could hurt my career. Anyone else navigated this? How did you pitch it?

Do it. I fought with my company about this for months but finally got three days remote a week. The quality time you get with a 3 year old when you're not commuting is honestly life changing. Your track record after 5 years should count for something.

Honestly before you ask, check if anyone else at your company is already remote. If they are it's harder for them to say no. If they're not you might be fighting an uphill battle with their culture.

Five years is solid loyalty. They should be willing to negotiate. Maybe start with one day a week remote and prove the model works? Kids are expensive enough without racking up daycare costs that could be cut down.

Old school companies suck but they're slowly coming around. What's your pitch gonna be? Focus on productivity numbers not on the kid angle - they care about output. Show them you're more efficient at home and boom, done.
