Thinking about switching to a less demanding job

I'm making decent money at my current job but the hours are insane and I barely see my kids during the week. They're only little once and I'm starting to wonder if the extra 40k a year is worth missing so much of their childhood. My wife thinks I'm crazy for even considering a pay cut but she also tells me I work too much. Has anyone actually made a career change to spend more time with their family? What was it like?

I've been thinking about this exact thing. The money is good but you miss so much. How old are your kids? That might factor into whether the jump makes sense timing-wise.

I made a similar move two years ago. The pay cut stung for the first few months but being at my kids' soccer games and actually seeing them before bedtime changed everything. No regrets.

Before you switch jobs see if you can negotiate the hours at your current place. Sometimes companies will do flex arrangements if you ask. Might get you the best of both worlds.

Do it if you can afford the pay cut. I know that sounds simple but seriously, the time with them is worth more than the extra money. Your kids won't remember your salary, they'll remember if you were there.
