Turned down a promotion because of my kids
I'm probably the only guy here who did this but it felt right. New role would've been 20% travel, longer hours, more pressure. My kids are 5, 7, and 9. They need me here. I've seen guys take these promotions and their families fall apart. Yeah the money would've been nice, another 30k a year. But my kids saying "Dad, are you coming to my game?" means more to me. Talked to my boss about other growth opportunities that don't require travel. Felt good standing up for my priorities. Some guys probably think I'm wasting my career. Honestly don't care anymore.
You're not the only one. I turned down extra responsibilities that would've required more travel too. At some point the money just doesn't matter as much as being present for them.
