From always being the funny guy to actually being present
Used to think my job was to make everyone laugh and keep things light. Realized about a year ago that I was using humor as a shield. My kids didn't need another comedian, they needed their dad. So I stopped cracking jokes during family dinner and actually asked about their days. Started playing board games instead of being on my phone. It's awkward sometimes because I don't have a joke to fall back on but man the conversations are deeper now. My oldest told me last week I was his favorite person to talk to. That hit different than any laugh ever did.
Why did the funny dad become the present dad? Because he finally got the joke. But seriously, this is real growth right here.
