Sober dad vs drunk dad - my kids deserve better
I was a functional alcoholic for years. My family made excuses for me. Then one day my oldest said he didn't want to bring friends over because he was embarrassed. That hit different. Got sober 3 years ago and man, the person I've become is unrecognizable. I miss the escape of drinking some nights but I don't miss who I was. My relationship with my kids is actually real now. We talk about real stuff. Being present is so much better than being numb.
That moment when your kid doesn't want friends over, that's the real wake up call. Respect to you for making the change and being the dad they needed. That's the kind of thing they'll tell their own kids about someday.
