Went from totally absent to actually being a father
This is kind of embarrassing to admit but I was that dad who saw his kids every other weekend and just let screens raise them. I'd give them money instead of time, miss important stuff, show up late. Last year my youngest asked me 'Dad, do you even like spending time with us?' Absolutely wrecked me. Been going to therapy, really working on my stuff, and I'm completely different now. I'm actually present. I have real conversations with them. My relationship with my oldest went from 'ok' to genuinely close. Took hitting rock bottom but I'm grateful.
Dude, that's awesome you're making that shift. Takes real courage to admit you weren't doing it right and then actually change. Your kids are going to remember the dad who showed up, not the one who didn't.
