What I've gained and lost becoming a single dad after divorce
Lost: spontaneity, disposable income, my identity as part of a couple, time with my ex wife (obviously), the family dinners I thought we'd have forever. Gained: an insane amount of patience, independence, a deeper relationship with my kids because they see me struggling and working hard, and weirdly more respect for my ex even though we're divorced. I'm also more involved in their school and activities than I ever would have been if we were still together. The first year was brutal and I'd be lying if I said I don't still get angry sometimes. But I'm a better version of myself in a lot of ways. Just took losing everything to figure out what actually matters.
Those family dinners you imagined are still possible, just different now. I make it count during my time with my three and honestly some of my best moments with them have been since the split. Hang in there.
