My ex wants to modify support payments because she quit her job. My lawyer says I have a good case but court costs would be 3k minimum. I'm barely keeping my head above water already. Anyone been through this? Is it better to just negotiate without lawyers or am I setting myself up?
Yeah but hold up, she quit her job on purpose? That's a different situation. Your lawyer might be right here. Don't let yourself get taken advantage of just because court is expensive. Sometimes you have to fight.
That's a tough spot financially. Court battles drain everything, money and energy. Have you considered mediation instead? Sometimes a neutral third party can work out a compromise that costs way less than lawyers.

I get the financial stress but think long term. If you set a precedent now that she can just quit and you'll cover it, you might be dealing with this forever. Talk to your lawyer about the cheapest way to handle this one.
