Situation changed and I want to try to get more custody time but I'm looking at $2-3k just for a consultation. Anyone know if there are legal aid options or if I should try to work something out directly with my ex first? We get along okay most of the time so maybe I don't need to go full nuclear.
Look into your state bar association's legal aid society first, they usually have sliding scale options or can connect you with pro bono lawyers. Minnesota has some solid resources for family law specifically.
Man, been there with custody stuff and it's brutal on the wallet. Check if your county has a family court facilitator who can help with paperwork at least, saved me a bunch before we got things sorted.

Before you pay out that much, talk to your ex about mediation instead of going back to court. Mediators are usually way cheaper than lawyers and if you guys can work something out together the courts will probably approve it anyway.

Some lawyers do payment plans now. Might be worth calling around and asking specifically about that instead of assuming you need 3k upfront. The custody situation changed enough that you might have a strong case and some lawyers know that.
