Child support adjustment - what did you do?

Got laid off three months ago and just found a new job but at less pay. My child support is still set at the old amount and I'm really struggling. I've been putting off dealing with this because I hate talking to my ex about money stuff. Has anyone gone through the process of getting it adjusted? What's the timeline like? Do I need a lawyer or can I handle it through the court system myself?
