Child support is way more than I can afford right now

Just got laid off and I'm trying to find new work but the court ordered amount is based on my old salary. I've been paying it but I'm barely scraping by. I know I need to go back to court to modify it but I'm nervous that if I bring it up she'll try to take more custody from me. We don't have a great relationship and I'm worried she'll use this against me. Has anyone been through this?

Man I'm sorry, that's a rough spot. Do you have a lawyer? Because you can absolutely go back to court and ask for a modification based on changed circumstances. Getting laid off is a legitimate reason to request a hearing. Don't just take the old amount, that's what lawyers are for.
If you can't afford it contact legal aid in your area. Most states have programs for this exact situation. Don't fall behind on payments while you job hunt because that'll create way bigger problems. Get ahead of it legally.
