Child support negotiations are a nightmare

We're trying to work out child support without going back to court because it would cost a fortune. But every number I propose she says it's not enough. I make decent money but I also have bills, a car payment, and she's got the house equity from when we split assets. My lawyer says I should offer X but honestly I don't know if that's fair or if she's just trying to bleed me dry. This is way more complicated than I thought it would be.

Child support negotiations are brutal. Try getting a mediator involved before you go back to court, it might help find middle ground without burning through money on lawyers.

That back and forth cycle is exhausting. Make sure you're factoring in your actual expenses and don't let her set the numbers, there are calculators and guidelines for a reason.

Going back to court for child support is brutal on the wallet. Get everything in writing though, even if you're trying to keep it informal. Protect yourself because things change and you need documentation.

What's your sticking point? Is it income differences, one of you wanting more than 50/50, or just not agreeing on a number? That context matters because some situations are easier to negotiate than others.

Try to keep emotions out of it if possible. Frame it as what's best for the kids, not about what you think is 'fair' to you. That usually makes conversations less combative. We went back and forth on this for months.

I get it, court costs are insane. But make sure whatever you agree to is actually sustainable for you. I know it's tempting to just accept less to avoid the legal fees, but that affects your kids too.

Get a mediator if you haven't already. Seriously, paying a couple hundred for a mediator is way cheaper than lawyers fighting it out in court. Plus it's usually faster and less painful for everyone.

This is stressful stuff. Have you guys considered mediation? A lot cheaper than going back to court and sometimes a neutral third party helps people actually work together instead of against each other.
