Child support payment situation

Just got laid off and my child support payments are gonna be tough for a bit. I know I need to contact my ex but honestly I'm dreading it. We don't get along and she's gonna assume I'm just trying to get out of it. Has anyone had to modify their support payments? How do I approach this without it blowing up?
