Communication through app - worth it or overkill?

Considering switching to OurFamilyWizard or similar app for coordinating with my co-parent. Right now we text and it sometimes gets messy. Text threads get long and we both miss stuff. Ex is resistant though, says it's unnecessary. Anyone use these apps? Do they actually help or just add more work?
