Working through separation right now and trying to figure out what's fair for custody. I work 9-5 Monday through Friday and want to be involved as much as possible. My lawyer suggested 50/50 but we live 45 mins apart and I'm worried about logistics with school. Does anyone have experience with split week schedules or alternating weeks? What actually works in real life?
Being involved is what matters most, not necessarily having 50/50 time. I make the most of my weekends and weekday evenings with my kid, and that's been enough to build a really solid relationship. Quality over quantity for sure.
The 9-5 schedule actually works well for consistency. I do every other week with my daughter and honestly the predictability helps both of us adjust. Make sure whatever you agree to, you can actually stick to it long term.
We went through this and it was brutal. Get a good lawyer even if it costs more upfront. The back and forth without professional help just made everything worse and longer.
9-5 Mon-Fri is solid ground for you in any agreement. Most judges like that consistency. Document everything and try to keep it civil with the other parent even when it's hard.

Fair is tough to define but regular schedule with the kids matters more than the exact split. Kids do better when they know what's coming even if it means less total time with one parent.
