Custody agreement needs updating - legal advice?

My daughter is 12 now and wants to spend more time with me than the original custody agreement allows. My ex is open to changing it informally but I want it done properly so there's no issues down the road. Do we need lawyers for this or can we just go back to court and update it? Money is tight so if there's a cheaper way that still holds up legally I'd rather do that. Anyone been through this?

Congrats on your daughter wanting more time with you! That's awesome. For the legal side you'll definitely need to talk to a family law attorney in your state. Every place handles modifications differently so don't rely on internet advice for this one.
At 12 your daughter probably has more say in this than you think. Document what she wants and why. That's going to matter more than the old paperwork.
