Custody schedule is chaos and we need to fix it

Right now we're doing every other week but with how many activities and sports the kids are in, it's just not working anymore. My ex wants to switch to 5/2 schedule but I'm worried I'll barely see them. Problem is we live 20 minutes apart and work opposite schedules. Anyone dealt with custody changes while kids are in activities? We want to avoid going back to court because lawyers are expensive and honestly it seems dumb when we can probably figure this out.

We're dealing with something similar. Three kids in three different sports plus school stuff. The every other week thing doesn't work when your son has baseball on Wednesday and your daughter has gymnastics Thursday, all with different parents. Might need to look at a 2-2-5 schedule or something more flexible.

This is rough. The activities really do complicate everything. Have you considered asking your ex if you could do shorter swaps around specific games instead of hard week boundaries? Not always possible but worth asking.

Every other week works until it doesn't. We had to switch to a modified schedule where the kids stay with me during their sports seasons since that's where most of their stuff is. Takes some negotiating with the ex but cuts down so much stress.

This is exactly where we are right now. MWF carpool duty here and trying to sync schedules between two households is a nightmare. Have you tried a 2-2-3 rotation instead? Gives more flexibility for those mid-week activities.

Have you sat down with the other parent and just mapped everything out? Sometimes seeing it all on a calendar makes it clear that you need to adjust. We did that and realized the kids were spending half their time in the car.

Yeah man, the activities are what killed our every other week setup. Soccer practice, piano lessons, it all piles up. Definitely worth sitting down with the other parent and mapping out the full year calendar.
