Custody schedule is killing my work life

The 50/50 split looked great on paper but my job requires travel and it's not working. Every other week I have the kids and then the weeks I don't I'm supposed to travel but I don't want to miss time with them. My ex is pretty inflexible about changing anything in the schedule. I'm thinking about asking about a different arrangement but I don't want to look like I'm trying to get out of parenting. The schedule just doesn't match reality. Anyone else had to renegotiate custody terms to make it work better?

This is rough man. I travel for work too and it puts a lot of strain on everything. You might need to sit down and be honest about what schedule actually works versus what looks good on paper.
That's a tough spot. Maybe look into whether you can cluster your travel days so they fall more on the weeks when you don't have custody. Might help balance things out better.
