Custody schedule question - what's reasonable?

Divorce finalized last month and I got every other week plus one weeknight dinner. I'm grateful for that but some weeks feel really short. Missing out on everyday stuff like bedtime stories on my off weeks is hitting me hard. Mom has primary custody. Our kids are 5 and 8. Thinking about trying to negotiate for an extra weeknight but I don't want to seem unreasonable since she's been fair with the schedule. Any advice on how to approach this conversation?

That's a good starting point. The key thing is whether that schedule works for the kids' school, activities, and your work situation. I had to adjust mine a couple times in the first year because what looked reasonable on paper didn't match real life.

Man, I feel this. Every other week plus one dinner night is solid but those gaps hit different. What helps me is making those weeknight dinners really count - we keep it simple but consistent so the kids know it's our thing.

Those short weeks are real. One thing that helped me was planning something to look forward to on my weeks - doesn't have to be expensive, just something that makes the time feel fuller. Keeps my head in a better place too.

That first year after finalization is tough because you're adjusting to the new normal. I've got 3 kids and split custody too, and honestly it does get easier once you settle into a rhythm. Your kids are gonna thrive with a dad who wants more time with them.

Congratulations on being grateful about it. Not all guys handle that well. If it's working for everyone, keep it. You can always adjust later if needed.

Every other week is solid. I've got a similar schedule with my three and it actually works out pretty well for building routine while still staying involved. The weeknight dinner is a game changer too - keeps you connected during the busy part of the week.
