Divorce is final today and I have no idea how to explain this to the kids

After 2 years of separation, the judge signed off on everything this morning. We have joint custody and a fair split worked out. But my kids are 9 and 7 and I'm sitting here not knowing what to say tonight. Do I tell them together or separately? Do I make it a big announcement or just say mommy and daddy are officially done? I want them to know it's not their fault and that both of us still love them. This is hard as hell.

Hey man, that's a big day. With joint custody locked in, you're already set up to show your kids that both parents are still fully in their lives. My advice is keep it simple and age-appropriate, then let them ask questions at their own pace.

I've been through this with my three and honestly the kids are more resilient than we think. The fair split you worked out matters because it shows maturity, and kids pick up on that. You've got this.

The hard part's behind you now. At 9, your kids just need to know they're loved by both parents and that nothing changes that. Consistent time with each of you means everything.
