Does anyone use a family mediator regularly?

Wondering if it's worth paying for quarterly mediation sessions with a professional just to handle the ongoing stuff (schedule changes, new situations, etc.) instead of it all blowing up. Has anyone tried this? How much does it typically cost and is it actually helpful or just extra expense?
