First time introducing the new girlfriend to the kids - tips?

Been dating Sarah for about 8 months now and things are getting serious. My kids are 6 and 11 (so very different maturity levels). I'm planning to take them to get ice cream next weekend and just... have her there casually. Not making a big deal out of it. My ex isn't happy about it obviously but that's not really her call at this point. Anyone else done this? Should I give them a heads up first or keep it casual and low-key? I'm honestly nervous as hell.

Let them ask questions and answer honestly but age appropriately. Your 11 year old especially will have stuff they want to know. Give them that space.

That age gap between a 6 and 11 year old matters. Your 11 year old might have some harder feelings about it than your younger one. Maybe gauge where each kid is at separately before the big introduction.

Don't oversell it or act like this is a huge moment. Just introduce her as someone important to you who wants to meet them. Kids can smell when you're nervous and that makes them nervous.

Keep it casual for the first meeting. Like a family activity where the focus isn't just on Sarah but on doing something together. Hiking, movie, something that lets them interact naturally without pressure.

Eight months is solid. I'd just be clear with your kids beforehand that Sarah's coming and set expectations about what the day will look like. Nothing worse than a surprise for kids that age.
